Forget high child mortality, high inflation, bad roads/infrastructure, poor health care facilities, jigger problems, food insecurity and political instability, some African countries like Uganda and Zimbabwe are facing a bigger threat, according to their respective presidents and homophobic supporters, gays are a threat. They are such a threat that bills have been signed into laws to make homosexuality a crime. One might think for governments that have problems fulfilling its duties, worrying about the nature of relationship between two consenting adults and questioning their decision would be the last thing on their minds. Religious and cultural based arguments aside; ostracizing, beating up and locking up a person for engaging in an act of love with another person with full consent without harming anyone in the society is beyond comprehension. This particular conference was symbolically successful from the beginning in many aspects. It was the largest so far by attendance, not only by powerful states but also Muslim states like United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Turkey [1] , which will help in the positive reception of the outcome by the Somali people as “open, and fair” unlike previous ones dominated by either Ethiopia, Kenya and the Western states, perceived negatively as occupation of Somalia. Additionally, it is the only conference attended by the leaders of Somaliland, a self declared de facto independent state [2] . Having leaders of Somaliland participate and agreeing to the call is positive since long lasting peace needs as much regional approach as it can get. Nairobi South seems to have been forgotten by the Nairobi City Council, or worse they have no idea it exists. I am specifically referring to South B area. I am not and will not in future sideline this particular part of the city, for this is a wonderful place where “things go down” quoting a random guy at a bus station. Surely things do go down here, directly on to public roads. And these things are amazingly beautiful pieces of plastic bags, used gloves, needles, plastic bottles and lots of shiny biscuits wrappings. This beautiful scene of man made heaven is coupled with an aroma that will linger in your nostrils for couple of hours after you leave. See, the little vegetable stall owners, random citizens and car wash guys are all environmental conscious lot.
